WINDHOEK, 16 March 2021: A derailment occurred at the TransNamib Swakopmund Train Station on the 16th March 2021 at approximately 13h30. TransNamib regrets to inform that initial reports indicate that one TransNamib staff member was fatally injured and another is being treated currently for injuries.
We can also confirm our infrastructure and rolling stock which include four locomotives and more than 25 wagons, which include empty fuel and containerized wagons, have been immensely damaged but no harmful or hazardous goods were being transported at the time of the accident. The company immediately initiated its emergency procedures. In compliance with company protocols an investigation into the cause of the derailment will be initiated to determine the root cause of the accident.
TransNamib deeply regrets this accident and will use its resources to seriously investigate the matter. As more information becomes available, we will be able to share with the public.
