TRANSNAMIB PROVIDES CLARIFICATION ON THE CURRENT STATUS OF ITS LOCOMOTIVE FLEET
Windhoek, 10 June 2026 – It has come to TransNamib’s attention that an article published on 29 May 2026 in a local daily newspaper contained inaccurate information regarding TransNamib’s locomotive fleet. The article made claims about the operational status of the fleet that is not the actual status.
The article stated that “only one of TransNamib’s 17 locomotives bought in 2017 is currently operational, with the remaining 16 SDD locomotives out of service.” This statement is factually incorrect and requires clarification.
For accuracy, the CSR Sifeng SDD-6 class locomotives referenced were procured in 2004, not 2017. In 2017, TransNamib acquired six C23EMP Wabtec/GE locomotives. Of the six locomotives acquired in 2017, five are fully operational and actively in service. The remaining locomotive, number 23-602, sustained body damage following an accident. TransNamib has engaged Windhoeker Maschinen Fabrik to undertake the necessary repairs, after which the locomotive will be returned to operational service. This means that all six locomotives acquired in 2017 will be fully operational upon completion of the repair process, said Desmond van Jaarsveld, Chief Executive Officer.
“Accurate reporting on fleet composition and procurement timelines is essential to ensure informed public understanding. The current misrepresentation may create an unintended impression regarding the condition and reliability of TransNamib’s assets,” the CEO further added.
Given the distinction between locomotive classes and procurement timelines, it is important that the public record reflects accurate information. The framing published in the daily newspaper may incorrectly suggest that TransNamib has lost 16 recently acquired locomotives due to maintenance-related issues, which is not the case.
